My Journey to Black Belt

By Alex Spieth
Age 9
Provisional Black Belt

I am writing to tell you about my adventures to become a black belt. I was introduced to Tae Kwon Do when my friend, Lorenzo, invited me to a lesson. I really liked it so I asked my Mom if I could join Reveal and she said “Yes.” I have been in Tae Kwon Do for almost three years and I have learned a lot.

I have been going to Reveal to practice two days a week for three years plus practicing at home in the game room. Some days I don’t feel like going to lessons but, I know that I need to stay focused and keep working to reach my goal of becoming a black belt. I always have fun once I get to practice.

I have also learned a lot of discipline and how to defend myself. Even though my Tae Kwon Do career has been amazing the crescent kick was my enemy for a long time. Bruce Lee once said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” I practiced the crescent kick a lot and I can finally kick above my head.

On my journey, I have become stronger and more flexible. I learned to work with others by going to black belt club. I have earned eighteen belts and the black belt will be the best one yet. I have loved sparring and different challenges. I have also loved competing in the DFW competitions. They were very fun and challenging and made me work harder to earn medals and trophies. Along the journey, I had an opportunity to be the role model to kids that are just starting Tae Kwon Do and I learned that I really love teaching. It gave me a chance to help others with stretching and learning to spar.

Besides learning so much, I have had a lot of fun. I have made lots of new friends at Reveal Martial Arts that I wouldn’t have met if I didn’t go to Tae Kwon Do. I have loved the Reveal community and the other activities outside of Tae Kwon Do like the summer camps. One of my favorite other activities is dodgeball.

I would recommend Tae Kwon Do and martial arts to others. If you like being active, learning, and building self-confidence then this is a great way to do it. Bruce Lee once said, “Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.”

I believe in myself. Tae Kwon Do has helped me to feel better about who I am. I have gone on my own journey to Black Belt. Three years of hard work and practice helped me to get here. I have one more test to go and then I will start working on my black belt degrees. I will keep going and keep getting stronger and confident.

Sincerely,

Alex Spieth
