Forms are an import component of our martial arts karate training program.

They teach us to move our body weight and help develop the internal discipline we need to succeed in all aspects of ours lives.

However, in order to get the most out of forms practice, it is important that students do not, “just go through the motions.” Every technique should be executed with utmost focus and effort.

Great effort should be made to make sure that every technique is setup properly so that it takes the proper path to its destination. Then, of course, you have to add the snap to it!

That little bit of “OOMPH” that you hear me talk about in class.

To get this make sure that your legs and arms arrive at the target at the same time. It maximizes the technique’s strength and power. Lastly, be sure to make an emotional connection to your form. Put a piece of yourself in it! Otherwise it appears flat. Imagine that each technique may be your last in a desperate battle. That there is no second chance in this fight that it’s now or never!

If you do these simple things you will find a new level of complexity in the forms. Moreover you will find that form practice will become an outstanding workout in itself.
